About

What exterior door work includes

Exterior door installation may involve the slab, jamb, sill, threshold, hinges, lockset, strike plate, trim, and weather seals. We match the scope to the opening and the way you use the entry. The opening condition drives many cost decisions. A simple replacement may need less work than an entry with damaged framing, a worn sill, missing trim, or a door size that does not match the existing opening. Hardware, glass, material, finish, and security needs also change the estimate. Our view is simple: do not spend on a premium door until the opening can support it. A costly slab cannot correct a shifted frame or a failing sill. We inspect those parts first, then explain what should be replaced, repaired, or retained. We provide design and construction services for residential and commercial properties. Related remodeling may include trim, flooring, lighting, cabinetry, or layout work when the entry is part of a larger project.

What Exterior Door Installation Covers

Exterior door installation is a construction service that fits a door, frame, threshold, hardware, and seals into an exterior opening.

  • Exterior door installation differs from door repair because it creates or replaces the complete door assembly, while repair addresses a specific failed part.
  • The service requires measurements of the opening, swing, jamb, sill, and clearance before the final fit is selected.

What to prepare before door installation

A few details help us price the opening correctly and plan the work around your property.

  • Photograph the door, frame, sill, threshold, and interior trim.
  • Note where the door rubs, leaks, drafts, or fails to latch.
  • Decide whether the entry needs privacy glass, a lockset, or a different swing.
  • Share any larger remodeling plans that affect the wall, flooring, trim, or lighting.
  • Keep the entry area accessible for measurement and inspection.
Process

How we install and check an exterior door

1

Review the existing opening

We inspect the slab, frame, sill, threshold, trim, hinges, and latch to identify the actual source of the problem.

2

Set the door scope

We confirm the door style, material, swing, hardware, glass choice, and any framing or finish work included in the estimate.

3

Prepare the opening

We remove affected parts, check the opening, and address framing, sill, trim, or threshold conditions that could prevent a sound fit.

4

Fit and align the assembly

We place the frame and door, check the reveal and swing, then adjust the hinges, latch, and threshold for proper contact.

5

Check the finished entry

We test closing, latching, seals, hardware, and visible gaps before reviewing the completed work with you.

Our Standard

Detailed Planning

We document the door, frame, threshold, hardware, and finish scope before construction begins and review changes through completion.

Precise Execution

We align the jamb, check the reveal, test the latch, and inspect weather-seal contact before handing over the entry.

Interior Exterior Improvements

We coordinate exterior door work with related trim, flooring, paint, drywall, and other improvements when the project requires them.

Overall I enjoyed working with Linda and her team. Even though there were no major redesign of spaces and I knew exactly what tile/fixtures/cabinets etc I wanted I still was appreciative of her insight on certain details and choices. It was very easy to collaborate with her. She makes an effort to be in-tune with a client. She was very responsive and took care of everything that needed attention as soon as she was able too. She made sure that I was listened to and taken care of as a client with her subcontractors. I would work with her again.

Best remodel experience we have ever had. The oversight, careful workmanship and ownership of the project was above expectations. Our design team was amazing. We also had the same person do all the work start to finish and was a total Pro. Could not recommend enough and will be doing any and all projects through them. This place is a gem.

Linda and her team did an excellent job! We would highly recommend them. We hired her for a kitchen remodel and asked for a very tight timeline. She delivered and we absolutely love the result. She was very commutative and available to us. Thank you Design and Build NW!

Questions about exterior door installation

Who installs exterior doors through HomeRemodelSnoqualmie.info?

HomeRemodelSnoqualmie.info installs exterior doors for residential and commercial properties. We review the opening, door assembly, hardware, threshold, and related finish work. Our company is licensed, bonded, and insured. The estimate reflects the actual condition of the opening and the scope you choose, including any connected remodeling work.

What changes the cost of replacing an exterior door?

Opening condition, door material, hardware, glass, threshold work, and finish repairs change the cost. A sound frame may support a focused replacement, while damaged framing or sill work expands the scope. We explain which parts drive the estimate and separate needed corrections from optional design choices. You can request a quote after we review the opening.

Can I install an exterior door myself?

A homeowner can install an exterior door, but the opening must be measured and aligned with care. Small errors can affect the reveal, latch, sill, and weather seal. We handle the complete installation when you need coordinated framing, hardware, trim, or finish work. A professional scope can also help when the door is part of a larger remodel.

Which parts should an exterior door estimate include?

An exterior door estimate should identify the door, frame, threshold, hardware, weather seals, trim, removal, and related opening work.

  • Door slab and frame condition
  • Hinges, lockset, and strike alignment
  • Sill, threshold, and weather sealing
  • Trim, flooring, or wall finishes affected by the work

We use those items to explain what the quoted scope covers.

Why does a new door still leak after installation?

A new door can leak when the sill, threshold, frame, or weather seal does not shed and close water correctly. The door slab may be sound while the opening beneath it remains damaged or poorly aligned. We inspect the entry as an assembly and check the sill, threshold, gaps, and seal contact before choosing the next repair.

Should I replace the frame with the exterior door?

Frame replacement makes sense when the jamb is damaged, shifted, out of square, or unable to support proper latch and seal contact. A slab-only replacement may suit a sound frame with matching dimensions. We compare the existing jamb, sill, trim, and hardware before setting the scope, so the estimate reflects the opening rather than the door alone.

What should I bring to the first door estimate?

Photos, measurements, symptom notes, and your preferred door features help us prepare for the estimate. Tell us where the door rubs, leaks, drafts, or misses the latch. Share plans for flooring, trim, paint, or nearby remodeling because those choices can affect the opening. We then review the property and discuss a focused scope.

Common Mistakes With Exterior Door Installation

  • Choosing a door by appearance alone can leave the slab mismatched to the jamb. We check the opening, swing, clearances, and hardware before selecting the assembly.
  • Keeping a damaged threshold can leave water and drafts below a new door. We inspect the sill and threshold, then include the needed correction in the scope.
  • Skipping the frame check can cause rubbing and latch failure after installation. We test the jamb, hinges, strike, and reveal before final adjustment.
  • Adding premium glass or hardware before fixing the opening can waste budget. We address fit, seal, and structure first, then price optional features separately.

Key Points About Exterior Door Installation

  • The door slab is only one part of the entry assembly.
  • Frame, sill, and threshold condition can change the work scope.
  • Weather seals work best after the door and frame align.
  • Hardware must meet the strike when the door closes.
  • A clear estimate separates needed corrections from optional features.

Scenarios

When Customers Call Us About Exterior Door Installation

1

Drafts Around An Aging Entry

A draft around an exterior door can come from the weather seal, threshold, frame, or wall opening. Replacing the slab alone may leave the main cause in place, so the full assembly needs a close check. We inspect the gaps and sill, then outline whether the job calls for a new door, opening work, or both.

2

Door Replacement During A Remodel

A new door may be part of a larger kitchen, bathroom, or whole-home remodel. The entry can affect flooring height, trim, paint, and nearby wall finishes, so the sequence matters. We review the door choice with the wider plan and include related finish work when it belongs in the same project.

3

Commercial Entry Fit And Use

A commercial entry must suit daily traffic, security needs, and the way staff or customers use the space. The frame, hardware, swing, and threshold all affect that choice. We discuss the opening and the planned use, then prepare a scope that separates door work from other tenant improvement needs.
