What Is Backer Board?

Backer board is a rigid panel installed beneath tile to create a stable, tile-ready surface. Common types include cement board and fiber-cement board. Backer board helps support tile and protects the substrate from moisture exposure, but it does not replace waterproofing in wet areas.

  • It forms a rigid base beneath tile.
  • Panel joints need proper treatment before tiling.
  • Backer board is not the same as waterproofing.

How Backer Board Works

Backer board is fastened over a suitable wall or floor surface before tile is installed. The panels create a firm base that helps limit movement beneath the tile. Installers cut panels to fit, leave planned joints, and place fasteners into the supporting structure.

Panel seams need the right tape and mortar before tile goes on. In a shower or other wet area, a separate waterproofing system manages water that reaches the surface or joints. The board type and installation method depend on the tile location and the condition of the existing substrate.

Backer board differs from drywall because it is made for tile support and moisture exposure. It also differs from underlayment, which may serve a different role beneath floor finishes.

Expert Note

When we install backer board, we check the substrate for movement, damage, and suitable fastening points. We also review panel joints and the wet-area waterproofing plan before tile installation begins. Our team keeps the board surface flat so the finished tile has a consistent base.

Backer Board in Practice: A Real-World Example

For a bathroom shower wall, we prepare the framing, install suitable backer board, and treat the panel joints. We then complete the waterproofing system before setting tile.
