What Is Underlayment?

Underlayment is a thin layer placed between a subfloor and finished flooring. It helps create a smoother base, reduces minor surface noise, and may manage moisture or sound, depending on the product. For vinyl plank flooring, the correct underlayment must match the flooring instructions and the condition of the subfloor.

Key Takeaways About Underlayment

  • Underlayment sits below finished flooring.
  • Product choice depends on the subfloor and flooring system.
  • Underlayment isn't the same as a subfloor.

How Underlayment Works

Underlayment is installed over a prepared subfloor before some finished flooring systems. The material fills small surface irregularities and gives the flooring a more consistent base. Some products also help control sound or moisture.

Vinyl plank flooring may include an attached pad, or it may require a separate layer. The flooring manufacturer’s instructions decide which approach fits. A separate product must not create too much softness, because movement can affect plank joints.

Before installation, the subfloor is checked for dirt, raised fasteners, damage, and moisture concerns. The underlayment is then laid according to the product directions, with seams placed and secured as required. The finished planks go above this prepared layer.

Expert Note

When we install vinyl plank flooring, we check the subfloor before choosing an underlayment system. We confirm that the surface is clean, firm, and suitable for the flooring instructions. We also check whether the planks already have an attached pad.

Underlayment in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner wants vinyl plank flooring over an older wood subfloor. We check the surface for uneven areas and moisture concerns, then install the approved underlayment system before placing the planks.
